FGCU Opens Broadway Hit "Metamorphoses" Nov. 6; Innovative Set Features Giant Rectangular Pool of Water

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University will open Mary Zimmerman’s “Metamorphoses,” which stages the great transformation myths of Ovid, at 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Arts Complex black box theater. Other evening performances are 8 p.m., Nov. 7-8 and 13-15. Matinees are 2 p.m., Sundays, Nov. 9 and 16.

One of the most innovative theater productions in recent times and a Broadway hit, Metamorphoses is a contemporary adaptation of the classic Greek mythology of Ovid - love and sadness, joy and pain.

Staying true to her modern storytelling mastery, Zimmerman presents ancient Greek mythology in a unique way, making Metamorphoses a Tony-winning production due to story, set design and original music.

A father’s greed changes his daughter into a golden statue, a boy’s obsession with himself transforms him into a blooming narcissus plant, and a husband’s undying love for his dead wife leads him on a journey to the underworld to get her back.

A highlight is a 14-by-16 foot rectangular pool of water with the audience in close proximity. The classic story becomes an intimate encounter.

“While the classics were once taught as a part of regular curriculum, this modern look at Greek mythology offers plenty for the viewer to take away,” assistant professor of theater and director Diane Stewart said. “The play is both intellectually and visually stimulating.”

The Wall Street Journal said, “Metamorphoses somehow manages both to lift you out of the moment you’re living in and speak to it with piercing directness.”

The FGCU Theatre Department invites patrons to also participate in the Department’s new “Theatre Angel Program.” For a $50 contribution, an Angel receives two tickets to the performance of his or her choice and the opportunity to attend a special VIP party with the cast of Metamorphoses on Saturday, Nov. 8 in the Arts Complex.

General admission is $10 and student admission is $5 with an FGCU ID. Make reservations to (239) 590-7268.
