FGCU Cohosts Affordable Housing Workshop Jan. 23 Sprint room

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public to attend "Affordable Housing - Strategies and Choices" from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23 in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room to learn about affordable housing conditions and trends.

Leading experts will provide an update from perspectives of both the public and private sectors at the national, regional, state and local levels.

Attendees will be invited to participate in a steering committee to address questions and issues raised at the workshop and identify ways to solve affordable housing problems in Southwest Florida through regional cooperation.

The program features keynote speaker Margery Austin Turner of the Urban Institute and co-author of "Rethinking Local Affordable Housing Strategies: Lessons from 70 years of Policy and Practice." The new national housing study was published in December 2003 as a joint research project of The Brookings Institute and the Urban Institute. It aims to help state and local leaders take on the realities of today's affordable housing challenge.

Regional and statewide perspectives will be provided by housing policy coordinator for the Florida Housing Finance Corporation Nancy Muller.

Local initiatives and updates will be discussed in a panel discussion moderated by associate professor Shelton Weeks.

Panelists include Cormac Giblin of the Collier County Housing Department; Gloria Sajgo of the Lee County Planning Department; Don Hadsell, director of Sarasota's Office of Housing and Community Development; Barbara Cacchione, Enterprise Community coordinator for the Empowerment Alliance of Southwest Florida; and Jim Sweeney, housing coordinator with the Department of Human Services for Charlotte County.

Public and private sector perspectives will be presented through a separate panel presentation moderated by Debrah Forester of The Forester Group.

"Providing affordable housing for all residents of Southwest Florida is increasingly challenging as land and building costs rise faster than wage growth," Forester said. "Workers from one community are finding that in order to find 'affordable' housing they must live in a neighboring community, which increases travel time to their employment and separates them from the community where their wages are earned."

FGCU and the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council are cohosting the event, which is being conducted by the Urban Land Institute Southwest Florida District Council.

Advance registration is $35 for ULI members and $45 for non-members with special rates for public employees and full-time students. Breakfast is included.

To register, call 1 (800) 321-5011 with event code 8118-0411.
