FGCU Expands Juvenile Drug Court Program in Lee County

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University College of Professional Studies and Center for Public and Social Policy recently announced the awarding of a new $258,764 federal grant that will increase assistance to local communities seeking to curb juvenile drug use and delinquency.

The Lee County Juvenile Drug Court Program is already serving approximately 20 juveniles who could be placed in a secure residential facility if the Drug Court treatment were not available. The main goal of the program is to decrease delinquency and drug use among vulnerable youth while improving community safety.

The new grant extends the service to another 25 youths with greater intensive monitoring and individual treatment and therapy.

The drug court team sought to increase both the size of the Juvenile Drug Court Program and the scope of its services because of the extent of substance abuse and dependency among Lee County youth.

The Lee County Juvenile Drug Court Program is a partnership between FGCU, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Southwest Florida Addiction Services, Circuit 20 juvenile delinquency court, court administration, the state attorney’s office and the public defender’s office. The U.S. Department of Justice is funding the program.

The goal of the FGCU Center for Public and Social Policy is to enhance the community development and social well-being of the citizenry of the Southwest Florida region through public management assistance, applied research, policy analysis and public dialogue.
