National Agency for Social Work Education Awards Accreditation to MSW Program

FORT MYERS, FL - The Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation announced recently that the Florida Gulf Coast University Division of Social Work has earned initial accreditation for the Master’s of Social Work program.

The accreditation is retroactive to include all students who have graduated from the FGCU program since May 2003. Approximately 40 students are currently in the program.

“Candidacy status is the first step in approval for accreditation. A program must be granted Candidacy status, successfully complete at least one post Candidacy site visit and have graduated one cohort of MSW students in order to be eligible for accreditation,” said Division chairwoman Pat Washington.

“This is an absolutely critical event. It means that our MSW students meet the initial requirement for licensure, graduation from an accredited MSW program.”

According to CSWE ( ), accreditation from the Council is the standard for ensuring educational preparation of baccalaureate and master’s level social work professionals who are competent at and committed to addressing complex human needs.

It is the sole accrediting agency for social work education in America.

In a Feb. 16 letter to Washington, President William C. Merwin said, “It is always a thrill to open the mail and be rewarded by an announcement of such an astounding success. I want you and the staff to know that I both realize and appreciate the effort such an undertaking requires. Hundreds and hundreds of hours on the part of your excellent staff has brought this dream to fruition.”

The FGCU Master’s of Social Work program prepares students for careers in social work in a wide range of venues including hospitals, assisted living facilities, child advocacy agencies, school systems, community mental health agencies and social service agencies.

FGCU is planning a celebration after its Advisory Board meeting, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, March 18 in the Student Union Ballroom.
