At-Risk Youths Celebrate Senior Year, Honors During Annual Awards Event May 6

FORT MYERS, FL - The state-funded College Reach Out Program at Florida Gulf Coast University hosts its annual awards banquet with community partners and school board members to celebrate a year of successes and several graduating seniors 6 p.m., Thursday, May 6 in the Student Union Ballroom.

Eighteen schools will celebrate their year of hard work in the area of academics, community service and special recognition as participants in the College Reach Out Program at FGCU.

"The College Reach Out Program will honor schools and students with awards such as best academic improvement and best community service projects, as well as seniors who are continuing their education at a post-secondary institution due in large part to the College Reach Out Program at FGCU," CROP coordinator Cheryl Sington said.

Keynote speaker for the evening is successful entrepreneur and motivational presenter Delatorro L. McNeal II.

"McNeal is a professional speaker, author, performance consultant and success coach. He educates, equips and empowers audiences nationally and internationally to become all they were designed and engineered to be. He speaks, coaches, and consults with top level executives all the way down to students," his Web site says.

McNeal "takes audiences by storm with his powerful, practical and paradigm-shifting keynotes and seminars centered on his mantra that, "Goodness is free, but Greatness will cost you! Are you ready to pay the price?"

He is the author of Robbing the Grave of Its Greatness - 8 Steps to Birthing Your Best Right Now, and The Rules of the Game - How to Write Your Own Ticket in College and Beyond!

McNeal is a graduate of Florida State University.

The College Reach Out Program at FGCU identifies "at risk" youth and develops individual plans to guide students from grades 6-12, including the process of completing a college application and acceptance.

"The College Reach Out Program strives to make sure that financial need is not an obstacle for the student who wants to continue their education," Sington said. "The program also strives to excite students about learning and how a love and respect for that enables them to make their dreams come true."

The majority of students in the Program are first in their family to attend college. The Program helps students attain the goal by setting up tutoring, SAT and ACT prep classes, mentoring programs, financial aid workshops as well as grant and scholarship connections.
