Eight Local Projects Win Grant Awards from FGCU Southwest Florida Comprehensive System of Personnel Development

FORT MYERS, FL - Eight local projects were recently awarded grants from Florida Gulf Coast University's Southwest Florida Comprehensive System of Personnel Development to support inclusive opportunities, seamless transition and family-centered services for children up to five years old with special needs in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties.

"These demonstration projects support coalitions of agencies or groups implementing what they learned," project coordinator for CSPD Peg Sullivan said. The demonstration projects were the result of two events FGCU's College of Education hosted for local agencies to engage in shared learning, collaboration, and learn new ideas and best practices.

"We are very excited about the opportunities to enhance the quality of services that this represents. Children with special needs and their families need responsive services because every child deserves the right to a quality education."

The eight $5,000 Early Childhood Grants are part of a General Supervision Enhancement Grant.

In Charlotte County, a grant was awarded to the public school district for training and kits for child care providers to encourage inclusive practice.

The Lee, Collier, Hendry/Glades School of Readiness Coalition received a grant for a trip to the Creative Preschool in Tallahassee to see inclusion and developmentally appropriate practice in action.

Three grants were awarded to the Southwest Florida Early Intervention Program. One was awarded for Colorado Model training for a team identified to serve medically complex children. Another will provide a series of opportunities to support use of play groups and other community environments by families with their children. The third grant was awarded in collaboration with FGCU's departments of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy to facilitate a series of focus groups and conference calls concerning use of natural learning environments and primary service providers.

The Collier County Public Schools/ESE/Pre-K Evaluation Team won a grant for a training series on Play Based Assessment.

Families First of Southwest Florida Inc. received a grant for family leadership development training.

The Glades/ Hendry County Pre-K Transition Team won a grant to help in support of seamless transition.
