FGCU Graduates 556 at 12th Commencement May 1; Two Ceremonies Planned

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University is expecting to graduate 556 students in two ceremonies during spring commencement exercises, 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at Alico Arena.

International entrepreneur and author Thibaut de Saint Phalle will deliver the commencement address to graduates, family members and guests during the morning ceremony. Provost and vice president Brad Bartel will deliver the afternoon address. President William C. Merwin will confer degrees.

As a new commencement milestone, FGCU is conducting two ceremonies to accommodate the increasing number of candidates, as well as the growing assembly of family members and friends who attend graduation. A graduate reception will follow each ceremony.

The morning ceremony will graduate approximately 260 students in the College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Education.

The afternoon ceremony will graduate approximately 296 students in the College of Business, College of Health Professions and College of Professional Studies.

Also for the first time, FGCU will award a posthumous degree to senior Matthew Schlotterer who died in January. Based upon the recommendation of faculty and his advisor, Schlotterer will receive a Bachelor of Arts for fulfilling state requirements.

Commencement speaker De Saint Phalle of Boca Grande is an international financial consultant, lecturer and lawyer who specializes in international corporate strategy, finance and investments. He has written numerous articles and books on banking, law, finance and trade.

His current book Saints, Sinners and Scalawags is a collection of stories that was published in January by Hobblebush Books.

De Saint Phalle is chairman of Saint Phalle International Group, a consulting firm in Washington, D.C. which gives advice to corporations, banks and governments.

Previously, he was co-chairman of the International Privatization Council in the United States and director of the U.S. Export-Import Bank. From 1981 to 1983, he was the first holder of the Scholl Chair in International Business at the Georgetown University Center for Strategic and International Studies.

His books include Trade, Inflation and the Dollar (1981, revised edition 1984), and The Federal Reserve - An Intentional Mystery (1985). He co-authored the books The Dollar Crisis (1963) and Multinational Corporations (1978) which both investigate international economics.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. respective for seating.

The ceremony will be FGCU's 12th commencement and includes students completing degree requirements during the spring term. FGCU has conferred over 3,550 degrees since fall 1997. Each ceremony will last approximately two hours.
