American Collegiate Hockey Association Selects FGCU to Host 2006 National Championship
FORT MYERS, FL - The American Collegiate Hockey Association announced it has unanimously selected Florida Gulf Coast University to host the Division III National Championship in 2006. The announcement came April 25 at the ACHA Annual Meeting in Naples.
The championship brings the top 16 ACHA Division III college hockey teams together for a 32-game event. FGCU Club Hockey will host the event at TECO Arena, March 1-4. This year, the championship was hosted by Arizona State University in Scottsdale. California University of Pennsylvania will host the 2005 tournament.
"FGCU Club Hockey will be working the ACHA in organizing what we believe will be an outstanding event for our hockey program, Florida Gulf Coast University and the state," club adviser Craig Rademacher said. "In the selection process for the tournament site, it was noted that FGCU has a model hockey program."
As tournament host, FGCU Club Hockey receives an automatic bid. In return, FGCU must organize, fund and coordinate the event. According to Rademacher, FGCU is the first university to host a national hockey tournament in Florida.
"As you can imagine we are quite pleased, a bit anxious, but ready to take advantage of this opportunity. We will be seeking corporate and other types of donations to raise funds for the event which is projected to cost between $45,000 and $55,000 above our regular season costs," Rademacher said.
"This is an excellent opportunity to showcase FGCU and the hockey program. We believe it will also benefit the local economy. When Muskegon Community College in Michigan hosted this event two years ago, it generated $1.3 million for the local community," Rademacher said.
The FGCU Hockey Club is an officially recognized student organization at FGCU and a non-varsity sport.
