FGCU Hosts Annual Conference on Homelessness Friday

FORT MYERS, FL - The Southwest Florida Coalition for the Homeless holds its annual conference 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 28 at Florida Gulf Coast University for the public to discuss Southwest Florida's homeless issues and solutions. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room.

"Regional Collaboration: Accessing HUD and Other Homeless Program Funding" features leaders in homeless programming and policy who will speak with an emphasis on the needs of Southwest Florida.

"This conference is the major opportunity for all homeless service providers, advocates, housing programs, social service agencies and citizens interested in homeless issues to get together and learn what is happening in Southwest Florida, the state and the nation," Coalition executive director and associate professor of Social Work Gary Lounsberry said.

Speakers include executive director of the Florida State Office on Homelessness Tom Pierce who will provide news from the State of Florida.

Director of the Miami Field Office for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Armando Fana will provide an introduction to HUD resources.

A panel discussion will address HUD continuum of care programs, and one session is devoted to exploring other HUD programs to combat homelessness.

Breakout sessions include information about public-private partnerships, discharge planning and case management systems, HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment among homeless people, regional technical assistance, challenges and opportunities for faith-based homeless programs

Faith-based and private organizations new to seeking funding for programs to assist the homeless are encouraged to attend the conference.

General registration is $30 and student registration is $15, and includes meals and materials.

Mental health professionals and substance abuse counselors who attend are eligible for six Continuing Education Units. The fee is $10 for each certificate.
