FGCU Dedicates Margaret S. Sugden Welcome Center Tuesday

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University dedicates the Margaret S. Sugden Welcome Center 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 29 in honor of donors Margaret S. Sugden and her late husband Herbert of Naples. The public is invited.

Located on the right just after the main entrance onto the campus, the building includes a large reception area to warmly welcome prospective students, their families, visitors and students. The building also houses an area to display FGCU information, a large 80-seat theater, and office space.

The Sugdens donated $1 million in 2001 to construct the facility. Before his death the next year, Herb Sugden told FGCU that he and Margaret Sugden wanted "to put the Sugden name on facilities that our children and grandchildren can visit and be proud of."

The building has approximately 7,500 square feet and cost $2 million to construct. The state matched the Sugdens' gift with another $1 million for construction. Architectural firm Andrea Clark Brown designed the structure and Compass Construction built it.

"Our goal is to create a warm personal environment within this building, positively introducing visitors to our student-oriented university," President William C. Merwin said.

"As the 'living room' to the University, the Margaret S. Sugden Welcome Center will be a place for prospective students, visitors and the current FGCU community to meet and begin to share the energy and magic of our campus. All guided campus tours will start from this building," assistant director of Undergraduate Admissions Tami Tassler said.

Other gifts from the Sugden family include a $5 million donation for the Sugden Hall for Resort and Hospitality Management and associated program startup costs, and a campus icon - the three-story Student Union clock tower, which plays the FGCU Alma Mater among other songs.
