Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education Grants FGCU School of Nursing Degree Programs Five-Year Initial Accreditation

FORT MYERS, FL - The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education granted five-year initial accreditation to the Florida Gulf Coast University School of Nursing Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing programs earlier this month for engaging in effective practices in collegiate professional education.

CCNE (), an autonomous branch of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, is officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. CCNE is the only accrediting body dedicated exclusively to the evaluation of baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in nursing.

"CCNE is a specialized, professional accrediting agency that ensures quality and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate education programs preparing effective nurses," School of Nursing director Karen E. Miles said.

"The CCNE accreditation evaluation process is rigorous and the granting of accreditation is an indication of CCNE's confidence in the overall integrity and quality of the FGCU School of Nursing programs."

Last year, CCNE reported, "By June 2003, 63 percent of baccalaureate-degree nursing programs and 77 percent of master's-degree nursing programs in the United States had affiliated with CCNE. More specifically, 485 nursing programs at 306 institutions held CCNE accreditation. Another 128 nursing programs at 82 institutions maintained preliminary approval, while many other programs were in pursuit of new applicant status."
