FGCU Hosts "Understanding Sexual Predators: Predicting and Preventing Attack" Dec. 3

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites law enforcement professionals, psychology clinicians, students and the general public to "Understanding Sexual Predators: Predicting and Preventing Attack," 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3 in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room to learn about typical precursor sexual paraphiliac behaviors that individuals exhibit before acting criminally.

The seminar is hosted by the Division of Justice Studies and presented by associate professor of criminal forensic studies Duane Dobbert, whose new book "Halting the Sexual Predators Among Us: Preventing Attack, Rape, and Lust Homicide" is the only one of its kind in America and is gaining widespread attention.

Sessions include discussions on mental health versus criminal justice perspectives, characteristics of clinical sexual paraphilias, paraphiliac behavior on a continuum, and personality disorders co-existing with paraphilias, and focuses on the theoretical and applied perspectives Dobbert presents in his book.

Dobbert has 35 years of professional experience in the criminal justice system and has interviewed thousands of sexual predators.

The dean of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, Abuse Counseling and Treatment of Florida, and Sen. Burt Saunders heralded Dobbert's book as an unprecedented manuscript for psychology clinicians and law enforcement personnel.

Dobbert said incarceration and therapy have not reduced the rates of crimes such as juvenile sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault. By society participating in prevention, those rates can be decreased. Dobbert walks people through the eyes of the sexual predator to understand the motives and intentions of people with abnormal and uncontrollable desires.

Dobbert is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Examiners and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Specialties.

The seminar is approved for five hours of Mandatory Annual Training for Law Enforcement and Corrections, and five hours of CLER from the Florida Bar Association. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged.

Registration is $75 for professionals and $50 for students, and includes refreshments. Lunch is not provided.
