FGCU Hockey Finishes Second at ACHA National Tournament

FORT MYERS, FL - The three-year-old Florida Gulf Coast University Hockey Club made its second showing at the American Collegiate Hockey Association's national championship tournament March 2 through 5 in Pittsburgh and skated off with the Second Place trophy.

In addition, two FGCU players were named to the All Tournament Teams. Matt Maida and Mark Barrett were named to the first and second teams respectively.

The Eagles play in the ACHA South region of Division III and were ranked No.1, according to the regular season record of 21-2-1, and seeded No.3 by ACHA in the 16-team tournament pool.

The first day of the tournament, FGCU beat No.14 seed University of Richmond 7-2. Next, FGCU turned its attention to No.11 seed Penn State. Penn State upset defending national champion Calvin College in the first round of play but FGCU had beat Penn State earlier this year 4-3 in the Compuware Gulf Coast Clash at the Eagles' home Germain Arena. In the national tournament, FGCU would again outscore Penn State, 7-1.

In game three, the Flying Dutchmen of No.1 seed Hope College lost 6-4 to the Eagles in a competitive and physical game.

The final game brought the undefeated Eagles up against the undefeated No.2 seed University of Colorado Buffalos.
"FGCU was slated to play for the national championship against a team who was undefeated during the regular season," hockey club advisor Craig Rademacher said.

"Two powerhouse teams: FGCU with its speed, finesse, and determination against Colorado with its team that was bigger, slightly slower, but just as determined. As the game wore on, it was apparent that it would be a grind to the end. Inevitably, and although the Eagles posted a 6-2 lead early in the third period the game was tied at the end of regulation time by the Buffaloes 6-6. Only a couple minutes into the overtime period, the Colorado Buffalos scored, winning 7-6."

The Eagles finished the season 24-3-1.
"We are proud of the effort and accomplishments of the FGCU hockey players in the national tournament and throughout this season," Rademacher said. "We look forward to continuing our winning tradition in 2005-2006."

Next year, FGCU hosts the ACHA Division III National Championship Tournament March 1 through 4 in Germain Arena.
