FGCU Invites Public, Media to an Evening of Service Learning Presentations April 21

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to attend a presentation of student Service Learning Projects, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, April 21 at FGCU to learn more about how FGCU students are involved in volunteerism and community service.

FGCU Service Learning is a program that provides opportunities for community involvement. The experiences support University learning outcomes, foster civic responsibility and develop an informed citizen who participates in the community after graduation.

Approximately 150 students present their projects during two panels, 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., and 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in Academic Building III 102, 105, 111 and 127, Griffin Hall 213, Reed Hall 163, and Whitaker Hall 101.

The students who are participating are currently enrolled in Foundations of Civic Engagement, a required course in the College of Arts and Sciences.

"Foundations of Civic Engagement is one of the many courses at FGCU to incorporate Service Learning into the academic curriculum. In the course, students learn how to use critical thinking to respond to community problems and issues," associate professor of political science Richard W. Coughlin said. Coughlin is organizing the evening of Service Learning presentations.

"Students have chosen an extremely wide array of Service Learning projects such as working with disadvantaged children, developing nature trails, assisting Alzheimer's patients and planning community events. These Service Learning presentations are grouped according to topic. We have panels that focus on environmental civic engagement, civic engagement and early childhood, campus-based civic engagement, church-based civic engagement, and so forth. The Service Learning projects include both individual and group efforts," Coughlin said.
