FGCU, 20th Judicial Circuit Host Drug Court Symposium, Graduation Friday
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University and the 20th Judicial Circuit of Florida invite the public and representatives of the media to the Drug Court Symposium and drug court graduation 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, May 6 in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room to celebrate National Drug Court Month.
Symposium faculty include representatives from FGCU and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. One panel of drug court judges and another of drug court graduates will address attendees.
The symposium concludes with a graduation ceremony for drug court participants who recently completed the drug court program.
In addition to highlighting graduates' accomplishments, the ceremony shows the successes of the drug court program since it was established in the 20th Judicial Circuit, which includes Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties.
Collier and Lee counties have established juvenile drug courts and Lee County has formed a dependency drug court.
The United States had 2,621 drug courts operating at the end of last year. Drug courts hear cases of drug offenders charged with non-violent drug related crimes.
Offenders undergo intense treatment and counseling that includes random drug testing and regular appearances before a judge.
The program utilizes a combination of positive incentives and graduated sanctions, including jail time, to ensure compliance with drug court rules.
