FGCU Plans to Acquire Naples Site

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University plans to acquire a site at the corner of U.S. 41 and Goodlette-Frank Road in Naples as a permanent location for a broad array of educational offerings.

The University plans a 50,000 square-foot building on the site to provide for general higher education credit offerings and to house The Renaissance Academy, FGCU's center for continual learning. The new Naples Center will increase FGCU's credit offerings such as statistics, college algebra and environmental courses, and serve as a performance site for the soon to be developed music degree program.

"As a regional University, we are committed to establish a permanent presence downtown that will serve the educational needs of the greater Naples community," President William C. Merwin said. "The current site of the FGCU Naples Center is outgrowing leased space at 1010 Fifth Avenue South."

FGCU's new Naples Center will be a major anchor in the Grand Central Station redevelopment project planned by developer Jack Antaramian.

"We're especially pleased to be working with Jack Antaramian and his team to create a vibrant urban neighborhood that will feature a plaza, pedestrian walkways, bistros, boutiques and residences all in immediate proximity to the new FGCU Naples Center," Merwin said.

Special features of the center include a 350-seat lecture hall with an acoustical design for chamber music, grand reception hall and multipurpose room. The lecture and music hall will be available to local chamber music groups for public performances and to civic organizations for public lectures. The grand reception hall will be available to community organizations for sponsored events.

The project is budgeted at approximately $27 million. FGCU is seeking private contributions of $14 million to qualify for state capital grants available through the Alex P. Courtelis Facilities Enhancement Program, which matches private donations for university capital projects. To date, two lead donors have committed $2.2 million. FGCU is undertaking a capital campaign to raise the remainder.
