FGCU Opens Student Housing Thursday President Merwin Offers Official Welcome Sunday

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University ushers in a new academic year when residence halls open for first-time-in-housing students 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18.

FGCU hosts New Student Convocation Sunday in Alico Arena and classes begin Monday, Aug. 22.

"Move-in day is an exciting time," director of Student Housing Pam Schreiber said. "Students and their families experience a range of emotions. There's lots of laughter and tears!"

After Thursday's influx, the remaining 1,860 students expected to live in campus housing this fall move in Friday through Monday.

To accommodate the growing number of students living on campus, FGCU opens Phase 7 of student housing this week - the last residence halls planned for North Lake Village - with Falcon East, Falcon West, Sandpiper East, Sandpiper West, Egret Hall and Pelican Hall.

All freshman and transfer students new to FGCU receive an official welcome during the FGCU New Student Convocation 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 in Alico Arena.

President William C. Merwin, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Bonnie Yegidis, and distinguished faculty offer words of encouragement and wisdom to the new students. The brief program is followed by beverages and a steel drum band on the arena's lawn.

"Convocation is a celebratory event that acknowledges FGCU's heritage, welcomes new students and their families to the shared pursuit of academic excellence, and affirms FGCU's unique mission," associate professor of physical therapy and Faculty Senate president Sharon Bevins said.

FGCU expects a record 7,000 students to attend classes this fall, a 13 percent increase over fall 2004. The new School of Engineering, enrolling students for the first time this semester, is expecting 80 freshmen exceeding all projections, said School of Engineering director Susan M. Blanchard and chair of the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering Nosa O. Egiebor.

Also arriving on campus are 35 new full-time faculty and staff, including director of the new music program, Nancy Cobb Lippens, who is developing the degree program slated to start fall 2006.

Media representatives are invited to visit during housing check-in, although traffic is expected to be heavy at some points.
