Public Invited to Fifth Annual Adaptive Sports Expo Oct. 28-29

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites Southwest Florida residents to join residents with disabilities to learn about recreational resources at the fifth annual Adaptive Sports Expo, which kicks off with guest speaker Mark Wellman, 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28 in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room and continues 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 29 in Alico Arena.

October is Disability Awareness Month and the objective of the FGCU event is to increase the public's knowledge of how people with disabilities live, work and play.

Guest speaker Wellman is a paraplegic rock climber, park ranger, skier, tennis player and writer. His book "Climbing Back" focuses on ability and the tearing down of false barriers to accomplishments and activities too long denied persons with similar handicaps, Midwest Book Review said.

The Adaptive Sports Expo features demonstrations and highlights some of the ways people with disabilities can be active participants in recreational activities and sporting events.

Information on different types of local recreational resources and activities is available and participants have the option of actually taking part in activities, including water-skiing, sailing, kayaking, aquatics, adaptive golf, quad rugby, wheelchair basketball and tennis, and other recreational activities.

Attendees have the opportunity to meet with a variety of local service agencies, vendors and groups involved with recreational opportunities through an informational exposition, which takes place in conjunction with planned sports activities.

The event is free for observers but participants in certain events pay a small fee for insurance.

FGCU students, faculty and staff, and community organizations such as area hospitals, vendors, Lee County Parks & Recreation and U CanSki 2 Ski Club, and others are sponsoring the event.
