FGCU Enrolls 39 Students Displaced by Hurricane Katrina

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University joins the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and the Sloan Consortium to offer online courses to Hurricane Katrina displaced students. Organized by SREB and funded through the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, this special initiative enrolled 39 students at FGCU.

The eight-week semester began Monday, October 10 and must end by January 6. Registration began September 19. FGCU's online offerings attracted students from twelve different colleges and universities:

7-Xavier; 1-William Carey; 4-U of New Orleans; 1-U of Louisiana at Lafayette; 4-Tulane; 2-Southern U of New Orleans; 1-Our Lady of Holy Cross; 1-Nunez Community College; 8-Loyola; and 1-Granthan College Engineering.

"We are delighted to contribute to this national project," says Kathleen Davey, dean for Instructional Technology at Florida Gulf Coast University. "We have many well-designed Internet courses and are offering 138 of them this semester. It was fairly seamless to adapt ten of them for this special 8-week semester."

Katrina displaced students are registered at FGCU as transient students and will not be charged tuition or fees. Faculty members are paid a stipend based on the number of enrolled students. The Sloan Semester is funded by a $1.1 million grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

The Sloan Semester generated more than 1,000 online courses offered by over 200 community colleges, colleges and universities. A total of 2,554 students registered in the Sloan Semester. All courses are offered for degree credit and are from regionally accredited colleges and universities. For more information contact Davey at (239) 590-7072.
