FORT MYERS, FL - In an effort to raise awareness about critical social and environmental issues in our region and beyond, Florida Gulf Coast University's Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education has launched the Terry Tempest Williams Student Dialogue. Its inaugural event focuses on human rights and social justice in Immokalee, a migrant farming community situated just 45 minutes east of the campus.

The event has been organized by students who work with the FGCU Center, and is targeted at University students, faculty and members of the wider community. Panelists include representatives from:

-The Coalition of Immokalee Workers
-Student Farmworker Alliance
-Pace Center for At-Risk Girls
-Guadalupe Center (soup kitchen; educational services) -Harvest for Humanity fair food farm
and affordable housing project

FGCU professor Dr. Maria Roca will moderate the discussion, while Assistant Professor, Dr. Ingrid Martinez-Rico will participate as a panelist.

Panelists and audience members are encouraged to consider these questions:

What social justice and human rights issues exist in Immokalee, and what is our responsibility as individuals and community members in light of these concerns?

The free event is open to the public, and will be held in the theatre of FGCU's Sugden Welcome Center, at 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 18, 2005.
