FGCU Opens "Necessary Targets" Nov. 9

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University opens the drama "Necessary Targets" by Eve Ensler and directed by Diane Stewart 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Arts Complex Black Box Theater.

Other evening performances are Nov. 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18 and 19. Matinees are 2 p.m., Nov. 13 and 20.

"Necessary Targets" is a story about two American women, one a Park Avenue psychiatrist and the other a young writer, who travel to Bosnia to help women refugees confront their memories of war.

Though the two have little in common beyond the methods they use to distance themselves from their subjects, they emerge changed as they confront their own fears in the face of violence, resiliency and war.

Based on interviews conducted by playwright Eve Ensler with numerous women who survived the civil war in the former Yugoslavia, "Necessary Targets" is a reminder of how America struggles to define its relationship with the rest of the world.

Actress Meryl Streep says the play is "A brave, powerful and crucial testimony against violence aimed at women as an act of war."

"Necessary Targets" features FGCU students Danielle Channell, Rachel Kazor, Tawnie McDowell, Joni Newman, Jennifer Russette, Jamie Spagnola, Emily Spivey and Miriam Anna Schroetter.

General admission is $10 and student admission is $5 with ID.

Tickets may be purchased in advance with a credit card at (239) 590-7268, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Tickets are also available at the door one hour before performances. Seating is limited. FGCU recommends attendees purchase tickets in advance.
