FGCU Invites Public, Media to Attend Mock Forensic Anthropological Dig Friday

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to attend a mock forensic anthropological dig 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18 beginning in Whitaker Hall 112 with FGCU professor and forensic anthropologist Heather Walsh-Haney.

During the dig, Walsh-Haney leads her Introduction to Forensic Anthropology class in the recovery of skeletal material from staged surface and burial crime scenes. Four groups of six crime scene forensic anthropology units locate, unearth, map and photograph mock crime scenes.

The undergraduate students determine whether the crime scenes represent primary or secondary locations, establish the number of individuals who are buried in or scattered near clandestine graves, uncover tools that were used in the crime, and aid the medical examiner by establishing crime scene perimeters.

The Collier County Crime Scene Unit and a Lee County Medical Examiner Death Investigator will be at the site.

At the end of the dig, the students present the findings from the fieldwork for critique in the classroom, as expert witnesses in courtroom testimony.

Walsh-Haney has aided in the identification of victims from the ValuJet air tragedy, the WTC attacks and Florida's 24 medical examiner districts. She has conducted osteological analyses of trauma and identity on historic mummies from Eygpt, a Bronze Age warrior from Alloa and the deceased from the Old West including a victim from the Oregon Trail.

For more information, media representatives should contact Carol Nelson at (239) 590-7852.
