FGCU Hosts Public Seminar Wednesday to Discuss Toxic Algal Species

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Biotechnology Seminar Series invites members of the public and media to "Phytoplankton Biodiversity: Where Toxic Algal Species Fit" 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16 in Whitaker Hall 129.

The free seminar features speaker Robert A. Andersen, world-renowned expert in algal biology, systematics, molecular evolution and ecology. The seminar addresses key issues related to Red Tides and toxic algal species around the world.

The seminar provides a broad overview on algal diversity, particularly marine phytoplankton, and addresses the ecological and evolutionary niches that toxic algal species play in the world's food webs and the in grand scheme of global algal diversity.

Andersen is the director of the Culture Collection for Marine Phytoplankton at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The Collection is a national aggregation supported by the National Science Foundation and is one of the most comprehensive in the world.

Andersen has published over 100 research papers and authored several books on different groups of algae. He has received national and international awards for his research and in 2005, he edited a comprehensive volume on the growth and culturing of algae.

Andersen earned a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas and a Bachelor of Science from North Dakota State University. Formerly, he was an associate professor at DePaul University in Chicago.
