Two FGCU Nursing Faculty Earn National Certification

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces two School of Nursing faculty members recently passed the national certification examination, becoming among the first successful candidates in the United States to earn the new Certified Nurse Educator designation from the National League for Nursing.

Elizabeth Murray, assistant professor and coordinator of the accelerated Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, or RN to BSN program, and Marydelle Polk, professor and coordinator of the nursing graduate program, both received the Certified Nurse Educator designation.

"In September, 218 academic faculty convened in Baltimore to take the examination," director of the School of Nursing Karen E. Miles said. "This examination communicates to students, peers and the academic and health care communities that the highest standards of excellence are being met."

According to the National League for Nursing (, certification establishes nursing education as a specialty area of practice and creates a means for faculty to demonstrate their expertise in that role.

Certification distinguishes nursing education as a specialty area of practice and an advanced practice role within professional nursing, recognizes the academic nurse educator's specialized knowledge, skills and abilities and excellence in practice, strengthens the use of core competencies of nurse educator practice. and demonstrates a commitment to professional development, lifelong learning and nursing education as a career.

Dean of the College of Health Professions Denise Heinemann said the achievement is "one more jewel in FGCU's and the School of Nursing's crowns."
