Press Release

The FGCU License Plate Is Safe!

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University license plate is here to stay. The Florida State Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles notified FGCU that its license plate sales exceeded the required 1,000 mark as of Dec. 31, 2005.

"We are very pleased to have surpassed our goal with 1,023 valid registrations," said FGCU's vice president for University Advancement Steve Magiera.

"All constituents of the University contributed to this effort including faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community. We are especially grateful to the Lee County Tax Collector Cathy Curtis for valuable assistance in reaching our target audience."

During the 2004 Legislative Session, the administration of specialty license plates was amended. Effective July 1, 2004 Section 320.08056, Florida Statutes, requires the department to de-authorize specialty license plates if the number of valid registrations falls below 1,000 for 12 consecutive months.

In August 2004 FGCU was put on notice that it could lose its specialty plate. With fewer than 400 valid registrations, FGCU's University Advancement office accepted the challenge and launched a vigorous campaign to promote the FGCU license plate.

As of July 2005 the FGCU plate had climbed to 676 valid registrations. The campaign continued with direct mail to constituent groups, campus competitions and drawings, a highway billboard, television and print ads, among other marketing efforts.

"The campaign garnered broad campus and community support and once again the University family has helped make the difference in the success of this project," said Linda Lehtomaa, senior director of Advancement and campaign director.

"Our supporters have shown their outstanding commitment to the University by responding to this campaign and we hope that everyone takes great pride as you see the ever increasing number of FGCU license plates on the road today."
The University continues to invite the public to demonstrate pride in Southwest Florida's public University with the purchase of an FGCU specialty license plate.

Proceeds from license plate sales provide scholarships for deserving students at FGCU.
