FGCU Hosts Public Seminar Wednesday to Discuss Role of Mentoring and Professional Development of Scientists in the 21st Century

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Biotechnology Seminar Series invites members of the public and media to "Scientific Diversity for the 21st Century: The Role of Mentoring and Professional Development," 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 25 in Whitaker Hall 104.

The free seminar features speaker Valerie Petit Wilson, executive director of the Leadership Alliance, a consortium of leading research and teaching universities, historically black colleges and universities, and several institutions that primarily serve Hispanic and Native American students. As executive director, Wilson is responsible for leading the consortium, managing Alliance resources and developing new program and initiatives.

The seminar addresses key issues related to training and mentorship of the next generation of scientists; diversity of ethnicity, culture and gender in science; and recruitment and retention of minorities and women in science.

Wilson served on the Ethics Advisory Board of the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health, and on the EPA Administrator's National Advisory Committee for Environmental Policy and Technology. She is the recipient of numerous awards from the Department of Health and Human Services, including awards and citations from the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General and the Assistant Secretary for Health.

Wilson earned a BS degree in chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana and a Ph.D. in molecular biology and genetics from Johns Hopkins University. Following postdoctoral work at Mount Sinai Hospital, she conducted research and held administrative positions at the National Institutes of Health and the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine.

Wilson has held faculty positions at Tulane University and most recently, Brown University.
