FGCU Center for Positive Aging Hosts Two Conferences in February for Professionals Working with Older Adults, Dementia

FORT MYERS, FL - The Center for Positive Aging at Florida Gulf Coast University invites professionals working with older adults and dementia to two training conferences Feb. 25 and 28. Dementia Behavior Specialist

"Dementia Behavior Specialist" on Saturday, Feb. 25 in 110 Academic Building III is an eight-hour training course about non-pharmacological management of behavior problems in dementia. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The cost for the first participant from an organization is $125 and each additional participant sharing a manual is $40. Extra manuals are $100.

The course provides participants with the latest research and information to start a Behavior Team for long-term care settings and community care settings for people with memory loss.

Participants receive a copy of the 400-page training manual including protocols to follow and at the end of the program take a competency exam for registration as a behavior specialist.

The training and the resources provided help nurses, therapists, geriatricians and care managers systematically assess and plan sensitive care for clients with memory loss and difficult behaviors.

Center for Positive Aging director Linda Buettner and clinical director Suzanne Fitzsimmons teach the course. Participants passing the exam are listed as Behavior Specialists in Dementia through the Center for Positive Aging.

Community of Caring Conference

"Community of Caring Conference" on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Charlotte County Cultural Center focuses on providing research based programs for people with memory loss. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The cost for professionals is $65 and for students, caregivers and senior citizens is $25

Keynote address is by Kathleen O'brien, vice president of the Alzheimer's Association. Bruce Robinson from Sarasota Memorial provides a medical update. Participants also learn about the FGCU Center for Positive Aging's research-based programs and services. Participants may purchase resource manuals for programs and Continuing Education Units, or CEUs, are available.
