Gorbachev's "Peace in the 21st Century" Lesson Plans for Secondary Level Instruction are Available through the FGCU University Lecture Series Website
Interdisciplinary educational materials for secondary teachers based on President Gorbachev's upcoming lecture, "Peace in the 21st Century" are now available on the University Lecture Series website located at https://www2.fgcu.edu/uls. Mr. Gorbachev will present his lecture at Alico Arena on the campus of FGCU on March 28, as part of the University Lecture Series.
The Gorbachev unit plan is based on a constructivist teaching philosophy, which envisions learning as an active process in which students construct new knowledge based on their experiences. The lessons address five themes: biographical aspects, cultural influences, environmental sustainability, socio-political sustainability, and economic sustainability.
Each interdisciplinary lesson plan integrates and explores at least three subject areas. The lessons contain a broad list of elements that offer flexibility for instruction. Secondary teachers can use these as a guide to integrate key aspects of Mr. Gorbachev's lecture to their teaching. The unit plans were developed by Dr. Lizzie Gonzales, assistant professor in the College of Education at FGCU, and Courtney Dwyer, a graduate student in the College of Professional Studies.
Each lesson plan begins with a graphic organizer that illustrates how topics branch out into its recommended activities. Each lesson includes the following elements:
A selection of activities
Materials needed for the implementation of each activity
Resources, including web-based research lings
Forms of assessment which comply with Florida Sunshine State Standards
Adaptions and modifications for special students
Technology required for the lesson.
The FGCU University Lecture Series, spearheaded by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Bonnie L. Yegidis, expands the world of ideas and creative expression for its students and the broader community. By inviting distinguished speakers of national and international acclaim to visit campus and speak on a range topics that inspire and stimulate dialogue among the community, the University Lecture Series advances the University's mission to serve as the intellectual and cultural center of Southwest Florida. Mr. Gorbachev's lecture is made possible through the generous support of the Grand Sponsor, McDonald Financial Group. All lectures are free and open to the public.
