PPG Industries Gives $50,000 to Fund FGCU's First Post-Doctoral Fellowship

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces a $50,000 gift from PPG Industries to fund the University's first post-doctoral fellowship committed to the development of a non-toxic marine coating for ships and structures.

President William C. Merwin and biotechnology professor Randall Alberte participate in the gift award ceremony Wednesday, March 8 at 10 a.m. in the President's office at FGCU.

Bill Roschek is the recipient of FGCU's first post-doctoral fellowship and becomes the PPG Fellow with the grant.

PPG Industries vice president for Research James Trainham and global director of Marine Coatings Steven Fisher present the check during the ceremony.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, PPG Industries is the largest producer of auto glass in the country. It is also one of the largest producers of resins, paints and coatings. PPG Industries has a factory in Tampa that produces transition eyeglass lenses.

FGCU's College of Business dean Richard Pegnetter sees the ultimate economic impact of this burgeoning relationship with PPG Industries.

"As Florida Gulf Coast University continues to be an important partner in bringing more diverse industry to the Southwest Florida economy, linkages between University research agendas and new businesses are a critical factor in success," Pegnetter said.

"The global stature of PPG Industries and the strength of our biotechnology program will make for a strong marriage."

The Economic Development Councils of Charlotte, Collier and Lee counties have confirmed attendance at the event.

For more information, media representatives should contact Alberte at (239) 590-7269.
