'Guarding the Innocent: Parents Fight Back' Symposium About Internet Dangers for Parents, Educators May 6

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites adults and members of the media in Southwest Florida to attend "Guarding the Innocent: Parents Fight Back," 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 6 in the Student Union ballroom to learn about the dangers of the Internet and how to keep children safe online.

Due to some explicit content, teens and children under 18 years of age should not attend. No one under 18 is admitted without a parent.

The goal of the seminar is to alert parents, educators and other caretakers about the dangers that technology poses to children and to give them tools they can readily use to keep kids safe and away from high tech trouble.

The symposium covers social networks such as, sexual predators, threats to privacy such as online diaries, cyberbullying and hate, inappropriate web sites and other materials, inappropriate use of gadgets such as cell phones, mp3 players, satellite radio and game appliances, and electronic communication such as email, instant messaging, chatrooms and bulletin boards.

FBI special agent John David Kuchta and FGCU professor of counseling Russell Sabella host the seminar and answer questions. Kuchta has been a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for over 15 years serving in both Washington, D.C. and Fort Myers. He is a former federal prosecutor who currently heads a multi-agency task force combating online sexual exploitation of children and is responsible for numerous convictions of child sexual predators.

FGCU presents the symposium in partnership with WBBH-TV, NBC2. NBC2 anchors Kellie Burns and Jessica Stilwell moderate the event.
