FGCU Hosts Conference for People with Disabilities

FORT MYERS, FL - The Southwest Florida Professional Development Partnership, a project of the College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University, invites family members, individuals with disabilities, professionals, community members and media representatives to attend the Treasuring Transitions conference, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 20 in the Student Union ballroom to learn about supporting people with disabilities to lead productive lives.

Keynote speaker Lou Brown, emeritus professor, consultant, expert witness, and key mover and shaker in the field of education and disability, presents "The Quest for Ordinary Life: Preparing individuals to function productively in the real world of work."

The conference includes a variety of breakout sessions organized in themed strands including an orientation to adult services for persons with special needs, advocacy and self determination opportunities, exploration of best practices to support futures to get excited about, as well as sessions to support persons with disabilities to live, work and play in our local communities.

FGCU's Southwest Florida Professional Development Partnership is working in collaboration with the region's five school districts, several family groups, and state and community organizations to bring the event to the region.

"Supporting the successful participation of persons with disabilities is the right thing to do. It enriches our communities and is a positive contribution to our local economy," Peg Sullivan, project coordinator of the Partnership, said.
