Economicology Consortium Selects FGCU, Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education

FORT MYERS, FL - The exclusive Economicology consortium recently selected Florida Gulf Coast University and the FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education to join the group as a result of FGCU's mission of environmental sustainability and the Center's multiple accomplishments since its founding in February 2004.

The Economicology consortium, founded and supported by the Wege Foundation, is a group of colleges and universities that collaborates with the Foundation to provide a forum for sharing information about ecological and environmental issues both on campus and in the community.

Originally founded as a consortium of Michigan's public universities, Economicology broadened its scope last year to include Yale University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, among other select schools. The group is limited to 20 institutions of higher learning.

Naples winter resident Peter M. Wege, founder and president of the Wege Foundation and a progressive environmental leader, coined the term Economicology in his 1998 book "Economicology: The Eleventh Commandment," which teaches how combining economics with ecology is strategic to achieving sustainability, and that businesses can be environmentally responsible.

"Wege is deeply committed to utilizing the vision of the Earth Charter Initiative in promoting values and principles for a sustainable future," director of the FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education Peter Blaze Corcoran said. Corcoran is a Sanibel resident and serves as a senior advisor to the Earth Charter Initiative, which has offices in Costa Rica and Sweden.

Annually, the Economicology consortium gathers university and college leaders to share experiences, strategies and techniques for transforming their institutions, and through them, society at large.

The Wege Foundation promotes environmental education from kindergarten through university post-graduate levels, while also focusing on green building technology and practices, among other priorities.

The mission of the FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education ( is to advance understanding and achievement of the goals of environmental and sustainability education through innovative educational research methods, emergent eco-pedagogies, and educational philosophy and practice based on ethics of care and sustainability.
