FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University ushers in a new academic year when residence halls open for first-time-in-housing students Thursday, and officially welcomes students during FGCU New Student Convocation 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 20 in Alico Arena. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 21.
"Move-in day is an exciting time," director of Student Housing Pam Schreiber said. "Students and their families experience a range of emotions. There's lots of laughter and tears."
Student housing is at capacity this semester with 1,948 students. Students returning to student housing move in Friday through Monday.
Also during the weekend, all freshmen and transfer students new to FGCU receive an official welcome during the FGCU New Student Convocation 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20 in Alico Arena.
President William C. Merwin, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Bonnie Yegidis, Vice President for Student Affairs Mike Rollo, and distinguished faculty offer words of encouragement and wisdom to new students.
"Convocation is a celebratory event that acknowledges FGCU's heritage, welcomes new students and their families to the shared pursuit of academic excellence, and affirms FGCU's unique mission," Faculty Senate President Sharon Bevins said.
FGCU expects a record 8,100 students to attend classes this fall, a 12 percent increase over fall 2005. Also arriving on campus are 50 new faculty.
New items this academic year include the launch of the music degree program, which is enrolling students for the first time this semester. Athletics begins its transition to NCAA Div. I play next year, and first Vice President for Student Affairs Mike Rollo began July 1.
FGCU this month opens the new 85,000 square-foot library expansion, more than doubling the 52,000 square feet the library has had since 1997. The $17 million expansion satisfies re-accreditation requirements while improving the space for study, research and related areas.
By the end of the fall, FGCU plans to open a $6 million, 500-space parking facility. The garage is the first of its kind on the campus.
Earlier this summer, FGCU opened Academic Building 5. The $8.95 million structure includes wireless Internet access and a 280-seat theater style classroom.
Media representatives are invited to visit the Student Housing Commons during housing check-in, although traffic is expected to be heavy during some periods. To safeguard student privacy, requests for interviews with students or families should be made to coordinator of Student Housing Susan Thomas at (239) 590-1701.
For more information about FGCU New Student Convocation, media representatives should contact Bevins at (239) 590-7533.
For general FGCU information and the start of classes, media representatives should contact associate vice president for Community Relations Audrea Anderson at (239) 590-1083.
