Public Invited to Sixth Annual Adaptive Sports Expo Oct. 6-7

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites Southwest Florida to learn about recreational resources at the sixth annual Adaptive Sports Expo, which kicks off with a pool party at 5:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 6 in the FGCU Aquatics Center and continues 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 in Alico Arena.

October is Disability Awareness Month and the objective of the FGCU event is to increase the public's knowledge of how people with disabilities live, work and play.

Guest speaker Liz Fordred will be on hand to share her story about how she and her husband, both paraplegics, built a yacht and sailed from their home in South Africa to Florida. Her book "Ocean to Cross" chronicles the couple's experience during the journey. The book will be available for purchase.

The Adaptive Sports Expo features demonstrations and highlights some of the ways people with disabilities can be active participants in recreational activities and sporting events.

Information on different types of local recreational resources and activities is available and participants have the option of actually taking part in activities, including water-skiing, sailing, kayaking, aquatics, adaptive golf, quad rugby, wheelchair basketball and tennis, and other recreational activities.

Attendees have the opportunity to meet with a variety of local service agencies, vendors and groups involved with recreational opportunities through an informational exposition, which takes place in conjunction with planned sports activities.

FGCU students, faculty and staff, and community organizations such as vendors, Collier County Parks & Recreation, Lee County Parks & Recreation and U CanSki 2 Ski Club, and others are sponsoring the event.

For more information, contact Rose McGahee or Cori Bright in the FGCU Office of Adaptive Services at (239) 590-7958 or (239) 590-7956, or or
