FGCU Presents First Faculty Recital Oct. 26

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public to attend a campus recital by soprano Jeanie Darnell, assistant professor in the Department of Music, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26 in the Student Union ballroom, accompanied by pianist and associate professor of music Michael Baron.

Darnell performs works by Carlisle Floyd, Moses Hogan, Lori Laitman, Franz Liszt, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Puccini and Richard Wagner.

Darnell teaches applied voice, diction for singers and music literature. Her work involves helping to grow a nationally competitive academic voice program in a new music program, implementing a viable voice curriculum, serving on recital committees and creating supplemental educational opportunities to enrich the training of voice majors.

As a concert artist, she recently performed as soloist in the Mozart Requiem with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and presented songs by featured living composers Robert Boury, Richard Hundley, Lori Laitman and Z. Randall Stroope at the Songs Across the Americas Festival in 2006.

Darnell was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions in 1998.

She has performed as soprano soloist in major concert and oratorio repertoires, including the Brahms' Ein Duetsches Requiem with the Omaha Symphony, Bach's B Minor Mass at the Denver Bach Festival, Mozart's Dominican Vespers with the Arkansas Chamber Orchestra, and Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Lindsborg Messiah Festival in Kansas.

She sang the title role of Suor Angelica with the Operafestival di Roma in Italy.

Darnell holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in vocal performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado-Boulder, a Master of Music in vocal performance from University of Oklahoma and Bachelor of Arts in music from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.

Last summer, Darnell presented her research on "The Songs of Robert Boury" at the National Association of Teachers for Singing National Conference in Minneapolis.

In 2005, she presented her research on "Training Male Adolescent Voices in Private Studio" at the International Congress of Voice Teachers in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Darnell also served as faculty member at Ouachita Baptist University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the University of Central Arkansas and Arkansas Technological University.
