FGCU Bower School of Music Debuts Ensembles Nov. 30

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Bower School of Music invites the public to attend a joint concert presented by all major ensembles 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 30 in the Student Union ballroom as part of a series of music concerts sponsored by the newly inaugurated music department.

This concert debuts the Wind Orchestra, String Orchestra and Chamber Singers. The University Choir has existed for several years under the name of University Singers. Sixty students perform in the three ensembles and 25 are music majors.

Rod Chesnutt, associate professor of Instrumental Music at FGCU conducts the Wind Orchestra featuring works by Biebl, Bernstein, Holst and Vaughan Williams. He also conducts the String Orchestra featuring works by Bizet, Handel and Mozart.

Chesnutt is responsible for the instrumental component of the School of Music while teaching courses in music education, wind literature and conducting. He holds a Bachelor of Music in music education from Tennessee Technological University, a Master of Music in trombone performance from Arkansas State University, and a Ph.D. in music education with an emphasis in wind conducting from Florida State University.

Founding Director of the School of Music Nancy Cobb-Lippens conducts the University Choir and Chamber Singers featuring works by Cobb, Handel, Lassus, Rutter and Palestrina.

Cobb-Lippens holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Music in composition from Michigan State University and Bachelor of Music in theory and composition from Oklahoma Baptist University.

The Bower School of Music's mission is to develop students' individual musical skills, knowledge of musical structure and style, group performance skills and leadership skills acquired through the music program.
