FGCU Professor Appointed to Two International Positions that
Focus on Environmental and Sustainable Development through Education
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University professor of Environmental Education and director for the Center of Environmental and Sustainability Education Peter Blaze Corcoran was recently appointed to two key international positions related to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
Corcoran recently returned from UNESCO in Paris where he participated in the first meeting of a select group of advisors to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. The FGCU professor and colleagues from around the globe were formally invited to provide expert guidance to UNESCO in orienting priorities and direction for implementation of the Decade. He is the only representative from the United States on UNESCO's new Reference Group.
Corcoran was also appointed to a new advisory position with the Earth Charter International Council. The Earth Charter provides the framework for making clear the ethical basis for sustainable development. "In addition to such international involvement, the Center is deeply committed to sustainability and education for sustainable development on campus. The Center's most recent initiative includes working with administrators to make FGCU's food systems more humane and sustainable," Corcoran said.
The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education works toward realizing a sustainable and peaceful future through scholarship, education, and action. The annual Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture and the Terry Tempest Williams Student Dialogue are the Center's signature events.
