FGCU Graduates 628 at 17th Commencement Dec. 16; Peace Corps Director Tschetter to Give Address

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University expects to graduate 628 students during fall commencement exercises, 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 at Alico Arena.

Director of the Peace Corps Ronald A. Tschetter delivers the commencement address to graduates and over 4,000 family members and guests. President William C. Merwin confers degrees and presents the inaugural Florida Gulf Coast University Distinguished Service Award to Commissioner Doug St. Cerny.

Tschetter is the 17th director of the Peace Corps. He was nominated by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on Sept. 13. He is the third director in the Peace Corps' history to have served as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

Growing up in South Dakota, Tschetter learned the value of assisting others from his parents. That spirit of helping others led Tschetter and his wife, Nancy, to become Peace Corps Volunteers in India in 1966, where they served as community health workers. Improving the lives of others has been a life-long passion of Tschetter.

After returning home from India, Tschetter worked in the financial securities industry for over 30 years, gaining strong management and leadership skills throughout his distinguished career. He is an active public servant and has received numerous awards for leadership and community service.

Tschetter holds a baccalaureate in psychology and social studies from Bethel University. He and his wife have two grown sons and three grandchildren. He includes travel, hunting, fishing, and woodworking among his hobbies.

The inaugural Florida Gulf Coast University Distinguished Service Award is presented to Doug St. Cerny in recognition of his exemplary leadership and support of FGCU as the official liaison of the Lee County Board of County Commissioners from FGCU's inception in the early 1990s through his term of office in November 2006. Commissioner St. Cerny's vision and steadfast commitment for higher education in Southwest Florida have greatly benefited FGCU and generations of students to come.

The ceremony is FGCU's 17th commencement and includes students completing degree requirements during summer and fall terms. FGCU has conferred over 6,000 degrees since fall 1997. The ceremony lasts approximately two hours. A reception for graduates and their guests follows the ceremony. Doors open at 9 a.m. for seating.

Commencement guests and attendees are kindly asked to refrain from bringing balloons into Alico Arena.
