Course Teaches Pets, Owners to Work With People With Disabilities

FORT MYERS, FL - The Center for Positive Aging at Florida Gulf Coast University offers a Delta Society Pet Partners course 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 in the Charlotte County Cultural Center for pet owners who would like to help others in Southwest Florida.

Pet owners receive training and later pass an evaluation with their pets to become a Delta Society Certified Pet Partners team. As a volunteer team, the owner and pet visit hospitalized children or ill or lonely adults, and work with people in rehabilitation. Locally, the teams become part of the Gulf Coast Pet Partners network. Animal handlers without a pet are invited to become involved as well.

The cost of the course is $60 and includes a Pet Partners manual and registration materials. The cost for a family sharing a book is $75. Pet owners should not bring animals to the course. The minimum age to participate is 10. Lunch is available for purchase in the Cultural Center café.

Established in 1990, over 4,000 Pet Partners teams now operate in 45 states and four countries, helping more than 350,000 people each year. Delta Society is the leading international resource for the human-animal bond and has been the force to validate the important role of animals for people’s health and well-being by promoting the results of research to the media, and health and human services organizations.

Director of the Center for Positive Aging Linda L. Buettner conducts the course. Buettner is a licensed Delta Society trainer.

Visit the Gulf Coast Pet Partners Web site at, or visit the Delta Society Web site at for information about becoming a future Pet Partners.
