FGCU Professor Selected Fellow of National Gerontology Association

FORT MYERS, FL - The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education recently selected Linda L. Buettner, Florida Gulf Coast University professor of Health Science and director of the FGCU Center for Positive Aging, to be a Fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, or AGHE, the educational unit of the Gerontological Society of America, for her outstanding leadership in gerontology and geriatrics education.

"I am honored to be a part of the AGHE Fellowship Group because it allows for greater opportunities to educate, raise awareness and offer others the chance to be part of making a difference in the lives of older adults in our community," Buettner said.

Buettner previously served on the faculty at Ithaca College's School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. She was an assistant professor at Binghamton University's Decker School of Nursing and served as director of that institution's Casella Alzheimer's Education Center.

A recognized authority on memory loss and therapeutic programming for older adults, Buettner has focused her research and clinical work on the clinical aspects of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

In addition to creating the master's program in geriatric recreation therapy at FGCU, Buettner has presented her research findings at various local, regional, national and international conferences. A recipient of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association's Scholarly Achievement Award, Buettner was also the recipient of an Alzheimer's Association Pilot research grant in 1994 and an Investigator Initiated Research grant in 2001 at FGCU.

Buettner was named the Senior Faculty Scholar at FGCU and a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America in 2003. She has served as the director of the FGCU Center for Positive Aging since 2001.

She recently formed an AGHE Gerontology Honor Society at FGCU called Sigma Phi Omega. The group of local gerontology scholars will be hosting its inaugural event on campus for the community March 29, 2007.

Fellow status is an honor conferred by the AGHE, which recognizes outstanding leadership in gerontology and geriatrics education by established scholars and educators. Fellowship status is open to individuals with well-established careers of achievement in gerontology and geriatric education who are employed by an AGHE member institution.

For more information, media representatives should contact Buettner at (239) 590-7497.
