Press Release

FGCU Art Gallery Opens 'Eberhard Havekost: 1996-2006 Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection' Feb. 22

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to an opening reception for the exhibit "Eberhard Havekost: 1996-2006 Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection" 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22 in the Art Complex art gallery, and a gallery talk with curator Mark Coetzee, director of the Rubell Family Collection exhibition at 6:30 p.m. The show runs through Saturday, March 31.

Dresden artist Havekost draws on photographic and video imagery as his painting source and subject. His earlier paintings were derived from magazine and television stills, and recent work has followed the progression of technology using his own digital photographs as subject matter.

Havekost references the mechanical and digital reproduction of his imagery in that the composition, color and texture relate back to the original video or still image. His paintings live in a deliberate world of subtle manipulation of form and color and detail. Each canvas portrays an ambiguous moment captured on digital camera or video still and then reinterpreted by the artist.

A special event is scheduled at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 21 in the Art Complex art gallery with Don and Mera Rubell to discuss the Rubell Family Collection, its development, and recent exhibitions and projects.

FGCU continues to make a variety of educational and cultural experiences such as the Eberhard Havekost exhibition available to the Southwest Florida community. All events are free and open to the public.

Admission to the Art Complex art gallery and parking in Lot 7 is free with a visitor's pass obtainable from the Information Booth when entering the campus. The gallery is open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays excluding University holidays.

For more information, media representatives should contact art gallery Director Scott Snyder at (239) 590-7354 or Assistant Curator Anica Sturdivant at (239) 590-7199.
