FGCU Hosts Seminar March 16 to Discuss Earth's Changing Climate

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University College of Arts and Sciences Department of Marine and Ecological Sciences invites the public and media to "Climate Change: What's Happening?" seminar 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, March 16 in Whitaker Hall 104 to discuss Earth's changing climate and its negative effects around the world.

The free seminar features speaker Sharon LeDuc, deputy director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, National Climate Data Center. She has been a part of NOAA since 1974 where she began her career at the then cooperative institute located at the University of Missouri - Columbia.

LeDuc earned her Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Missouri. She served as associate editor for the "Journal of Applied Meteorology;" consulting editor for "Weatherwise;" American Meteorological Association, or AMS, chair for Probability and Statistics; rapporteur for the World Meteorological Organization, or WMO, Commission of Climatology; lecturer for WMO in statistics; and delegate at the 10th Commission of Climatology at WMO.

She also served on assignment to the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, as part of NOAA's Air Resources Laboratory for 13 years. LeDuc served as Chief of the Climate Branch at EPA and managed the tech transfer of third generation of air quality models, including model evaluation and graphic/visualization of model output.

LeDuc received numerous awards and accolades for her work in the field of atmospheric study. She also taught and advised as adjunct at a number of colleges and universities including University of Oklahoma, University of Missouri, The College of William and Mary in Va., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and Duke University.

In 1999, she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from undergraduate alma mater Eastern Illinois University.
