FGCU Awarded Over $290,000 Grant to Fund College Reach Out Program

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University was recently awarded a $291,734 grant for the 2007-08 academic year from the Department of Education for FGCU's College Reach Out Program (CROP) to fund programs that help students in grades 6-12 focus on higher education.

The award was $100,000 over last year's award. "Obviously, we are very pleased at the increase this year during such a difficult budget year, dean of Students, Michele Yovanovich said. "The staff has done a superb job rewriting the grant and keeping the program in excellent shape."

Darrell I. McQueen, CPM, Statewide Coordinator said, "This award is the top ranked CROP grant in the State of Florida."

The CROP grant proposal was prepared by director of Student Support Services Cathy Doyle, and Julie Rose, outreach coordinator. CROP staff including Sally Berg, Paul Pierre-Louis and Darlyn Scott, work with middle and high school students in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties to identify and serve capable, but underrepresented students in grades 6-12. The staff also provides programs such as admissions and financial aid workshops, summer programs and college exploration sessions designed to prepare students for life at the college level.

School site CROP coordinators work closely with students for at least four hours per week to build reading, critical thinking and test taking skills. Coordinators follow the curriculum of Sean Covey's book, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens" to motivate and keep the students focused on higher education.

"We are so lucky to have such a dedicated group of CROP staff and on site coordinators. They are changing lives," Doyle said.

The program is housed in the Division of Student Affairs in the Office of the Dean of Students.

For information, media representatives should contact Doyle at (239) 590-7909 or Yovanovich at (239) 590-7900.
