FGCU Art Gallery Opens 'inAppropriations: Contemporary Artists that Copy, Sample, Beg, Borrow and Steal' Exhibition with Public Reception Sept. 6

FORT MYERS, FL -Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to the opening reception for "inAppropriations: Contemporary Artists that Copy, Sample, Beg, Borrow and Steal" 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6 in the Arts Complex art gallery. The exhibition features regional artist Vyd, Chicago-based video performance group Paul Harvey Oswald and internationally acclaimed artists, Negativland. The show runs through Oct. 13.

The artists represented in 'inAppropriations' have the common bond of borrowing news clips, television, music and movie samples and reconfiguring the imagery and sound to achieve their own artistic vision. Many works in the exhibition have socio-political themes, commenting upon our information-bloated culture. Each work in the show has a very biting satire that grabs the attention of the viewer.

The history of appropriation that will be examined in the exhibition started with Dada and Surrealist usage of actual commercial or mundane objects taken out of normal surroundings and placed within a gallery setting.

This exhibition touches upon the 20th century legacy of borrowed and sampled sounds and images in order to project an artist's new interpretation of the items.

Programs associated with this art exhibition include a performance by Paul Harvey Oswald at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27 at the FGCU Arts Complex. Co-founder of Negativland Mark Hosler presents the video show/lecture "Adventures in Illegal Art: Creative Media Resistance and Negativland," 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11. Negativland is also tentatively scheduled to perform at FGCU in Nov. (time and day to be determined).

For ticket information contact the Arts Complex black box theater at (239) 590-7268.

For information about the exhibition, contact gallery director Scott Snyder at (239) 590-7354, or assistant curator Anica Sturdivant at (239) 590-7199, or for season of the arts brochure.
