FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education Hosts Third Annual Terry Tempest Williams Student Dialogue

FORT MYERS, FL - The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education at Florida Gulf Coast University invites students, faculty and the public to the third annual Terry Tempest Williams Student Dialogue, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 in the Student Union ballroom.

The goals of the Student Dialogue are education, awareness-raising, and empowerment linked to the choices people make every day.

Interim President Richard Pegnetter's decision to sign the American College & University President's Climate Commitment establishes important goals toward carbon neutrality at FGCU.

Confirmed panelists include Richard Clugston, vice president of Humane Sustainable Development and Religion, The Humane Society of the United States; and Lewis Johnson, director of Environmental Health and Safety at FGCU.

Clugston will speak about the effects of agricultural and food systems on animals and Earth's climate. Johnson will discuss how the President's Climate Commitment will be implemented at the University, including plans to monitor and reduce the climate impact of University operations.

In addition, representatives from dining services will be invited to discuss what can be done to source local, humane, and sustainable foods processed and transported with less fossil fuel to FGCU dining halls.

The Terry Tempest Williams Student Dialogue was developed to raise awareness among FGCU students, faculty and community members about critical issues in the region.

Intended to spark youth activism and inspire the intellectual climate among the FGCU and Southwest Florida communities, the Student Dialogue initiative fosters an open space for dialogue and student ownership of that dialogue. Students will organize the Dialogue and are intended as the primary audience.

The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education works toward realizing a sustainable and peaceful future through scholarship, education, and action.
