FGCU Art Gallery Opens 'Every X Marks Somewhere' Nov. 1

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to an opening reception for an exhibition of paintings and constructions titled "Every X Marks Somewhere" by associate professor of Art Morgan T. Paine, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 1 in the Arts Complex art gallery. The exhibition runs through Saturday, Dec. 15.

The show features works created during Paine's 2006-07 sabbatical, as well as a large walkable ramp in the shape of an X that commemorates the first ten years of the University's life as an educational institution. He also shows his "Life Painting and Drawing," a 24-inch wide painting containing a series of panels that represent each of the days of a year, and on which he has worked virtually every day since 1979.

Paine uses acrylic medium, the essential ingredient in all acrylic paint, in two distinctive ways. One is to hand brush a daily coat of medium onto various sorts of rigid support panels for multiple months or years. The clear medium covers and recovers the surface, building thick layers of nearly transparent medium that undulates in regular but unpredictable ways. The second method of application involves the brushing of medium against the inner edge of a closed frame, leaving a thin but discernable lip of medium that is affixed to the entire interior edge of the frame, extending into the open space defined by the picture frame. The process is repeated daily, each painting session building on the previous result, each session adding about 1/16 of an inch to the painted surface until the accumulated medium spans the entire opening of the frame.

Paine is the founding faculty of the FGCU Art program. He came to FGCU in 1997 from Milwaukee, Wis. where he taught at Alverno College for 13 years. Prior to that, he was an instructor and director of the Zoeller and Chambers Art Galleries at The Pennsylvania State University at University Park, Pa.

In 1980, he earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting, with honors, from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Reed College in Portland, Ore. in 1977. He has shown his work both locally and nationally in group and one-person shows. In 2006, he was awarded a Professional Development Grant from the Florida Arts Council to help support his sabbatical travel to see Germany's art museums and galleries. He has been awarded numerous institutional grants as well as a fellowship to attend a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Teacher's Institute at Princeton University.

The Arts Complex Gallery is located at 10501 FGCU Blvd S. in Estero. FGCU is east of I-75 on Ben Hill Griffin Parkway between Alico and Corkscrew Roads. Both parking and admission to the gallery are free. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
