FGCU Bower School of Music Ensembles Perform Holiday Concert Nov. 29

FORT MYERS, FL - The large ensembles of the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University present a holiday concert 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Student Union ballroom. The public is invited and admission is complimentary. No tickets required for the concert.

Ensembles participating in the concert include the FGCU Chamber Singers, String Orchestra, University Choir and Wind Orchestra. The Chamber Singers and University Choir are conducted by founding director and professor in the Bower School of Music Nancy Cobb-Lippens. The String Orchestra and Wind Orchestra are conducted by associate professor of Music and head of Instrumental Studies Rod Chesnutt.

Selections performed by the University Choir on the program include "Fum, Fum, Fum" arranged by Mack Wilberg, "Riu, Riu, Chiu" arranged by Linda Spevacek, and "Betelehemu" arranged by Barrington Brooks.

The Chamber Singers perform "O Chanuka/Y'mei hachanukah" arranged by Robert Applebaum and "Here, Mid the Ass and Oxen Mild," a Shaw/Parker arrangement. The latter will feature assistant professor of Music and head of Vocal Studies Jeanie Darnell as soloist.

The String Orchestra performs Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Variations on 'Greensleeves'" by Ralph Vaughn Williams, and the "Christmas Concerto" by Arcangelo Corelli. Literature performed by the Wind Orchestra is "The Eighth Candle" by Stephen Reisteter, "Sussex Mummers Carol" by Percy Grainger, and "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson. The final work of the program is "A Christmas Flourish" arranged by John Cacavas, and performed by all of the ensembles.

Nancy Cobb-Lippens, composer, conductor and professor, is director of the Bower School of Music. Under her composing name of "Nancy Hill Cobb," she has published numerous compositions with companies such as Hinshaw, Santa Barbara, Alliance, Gentry, Bourne and Leawood.

She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition from the University of Oklahoma where she studied with Michael Hennagin, a Master of Music in composition from Michigan State University and Bachelor of Music with Honors in theory and composition from Oklahoma Baptist University. She also completed post-doctoral studies in choral conducting at the Eastman School of Music. In addition, Cobb-Lippens is artistic director and conductor of the Fort Myers Symphonic Mastersingers.

Associate professor of Music Rod M. Chesnutt is responsible for the components of the university music program, as well as teaches courses in music education, wind literature and conducting. He holds a Ph.D. in music education with an emphasis in wind conducting from Florida State University, a Master of Music in trombone performance from Arkansas State University, and a Bachelor of Music in music education from Tennessee Technological University.

Chesnutt also served as chair of the Division of Ensembles and Conducting and director of symphonic and marching bands at the University of Iowa. He also was director of bands at Mississippi State University and the State University of West Georgia. Additionally, he served as music director/conductor of the Starkville/MSU Symphony Orchestra, assistant director of bands and director of Cornhusker Marching Band at the University of Nebraska.
