FGCU Presents "Innovative Urban and Rural Planning in Florida" Workshop Dec. 1

FORT MYERS, FL- Florida Gulf Coast University's Center for Public and Social Policy and the Institute for Government present "Innovative Urban and Rural Planning in Florida" workshop 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 in Student Union 213, to provide an opportunity to work with nationally renowned planner Bill Spikowski.

Spikowski leads participants in a daylong workshop focused on planning practices in two challenging contexts. The morning session focuses on the usefulness, construction, and application of form-based codes in urban areas throughout Florida.

The afternoon session covers policies and tools for planning in rural areas. This workshop is highly interactive. It uses the unique planning environment of the State of Florida to provide a backdrop for the development of good planning practice. Participants have the opportunity to earn AICP continuing education credit and/or use the course as credit towards the Planning Certificate to be offered beginning in fall 2008 through the Division of Public Affairs.

Spikowski is principal of Spikowski Planning Associates since 1992. The consulting firm specializes in comprehensive planning, community plans, redevelopment plans, and preparation of land development regulations, primarily for public agencies and community organization.

Prior to 1992, Spikowski worked for Lee County government as principal planner, senior planner, Deputy Director of Community Development and Director of Growth Management. In addition, he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Congress for New Urbanism, American Planning Association, and the Florida Planning and Zoning Association.

The cost for the event is $109, and refreshments are included.
