FGCU School of Nursing Participates in Annual Swamp Cabbage Festival; Nursing Students Conduct Health Screenings

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University School of Nursing will participate in the annual Swamp Cabbage Festival 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23 and Feb. 24, at Barron Park, State Road 29 (Bridge Street) and Park Avenue in LaBelle. Undergraduate and graduate nursing students wearing T-shirts that state "Fight Diabetes" will conduct blood pressure screenings, blood sugar checks, nutrition, and exercise as part of an initiative to fight diabetes.

This community outreach project, called PreFIT, stands for pre-diabetes family intervention teaching project, and was developed by FGCU graduate school of nursing faculty and students. Professor Rosalyn Gross, family nurse practitioner in the Master of Science Nursing program at FGCU spearheaded the project.

"PreFIT is a perfect fit for the festival. It is a great opportunity to provide information about a major Florida health problem and get families involved," said Gross.

The Swamp Cabbage Festival celebrates Florida's state tree, the Sabal palmetto. Over 100 vendors are expected to line the streets, selling delicacies, crafts and trinkets. Sponsorship for a health education booth is provided by the recently opened Hendry Regional Convenient Care Center and Hendry Regional Medical Center.

For more information, media representatives should contact Gross at (239) 590-7521.
