Students in the FGCU Power Club Compete in National Powerlifting Championship; FGCU Junior Takes First Place

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University students in the FGCU Power Club competed in the USA Powerlifting Collegiate National Championships in Denver last week. President of the Power Club and junior Garrett Owens placed first in the 275 pound weight division.

Seven members of the Power Club competed in the championship. FGCU students who competed are Garrett Owens, Brock Billman, Cydney Chasky, Chris Edwards, Jon Hernandez, Fred Lomangino, Taylor Schinkel and Dawn Gant, who qualified, but was unable to travel due to illness. The students qualified either prior to or at the Florida State Powerlifting Championships in Miami on February 23 and 24.

Chasky placed fourth in the women's 132 pound weight division, out of 12 lifters who qualified.

Hernandez placed seventh in the 242 pound weight division, out of 24 lifters who qualified.

Lomangino placed fifth in the 275 pound weight division, highest bench press (446 pounds) in the nation in that weight class out of 15 lifters who qualified.

Chasky, Lomangino and Owens achieved All American status for being in the top five of their weight class.

Billman, Edwards, Hernandez, Lomangino and Owens have been invited to the North American Powerlifting Federation's 6th NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championship and the 3rd Tournament of the Americas Powerlifting Championship competitions in Aruba in June.

The FGCU Power Club is a collection of students who come together to train and learn how to compete in various weighted sports, such as Powerlifting, Olympic Weightlifting, Scottish High Land Games and Strong Man/Woman training.

The club has progressed since its foundation in fall 2003. Accomplishments include hosting Florida State Powerlifting Championships and Strongman Competitions, currently holding no less than 33 Florida State powerlifting records, and one male member placing third in the Collegiate National Powerlifting Championships last spring in Texas.
